Lengel Honored at Wayne Hotel

Exclusive June 30 2006

A reunion of the Lengel family in Wayne provided the perfect opportunity for the Wayne Hotel to honor one of the family's most well-known patriarchs, Jonathan D. Lengel. A prolific builder, Lengel constructed many of Wayne's most recognizable buildings including the Saturday Club, the Walmarthon estate, the houses of Poplar and Abderdeen Avenues, and, exactly 100 years ago, the Wayne Hotel.

At the Wayne Hotel's reception for the family last Friday, June 23, General Manager David Brennan presented a plaque honoring J.D. Lengel to his grandson, Lawrence M. Lengel. Accepting the plaque for his family, Lengel remembered his grandfather fondly and showed his appreciation to Brennan for remembering his family during the Hotel's centennial year. The family displayed photographs and other artifacts dating back to the time of Jonathan Lengel.

Many members of the Lengel family stayed at the Hotel while attending the reunion. The family, who came from as close as Bucks County and as far as Pittsburgh planned to attend a private talk at the Radnor Historical Society about the contributions of J.D. Lengel, as well as to tour the town to see his work first hand.

Special thanks to Anita Sayers and the staff of the Wayne Hotel for providing access to this special event.

Many Lengel family members attended the event, and are pictured here with Brennan and Clark Gilbert, Executive Chef of Restaurant Taquet.
