Rock Rose

Radnor
1912
Currently private residence

Rock Rose was designed by Zantzinger, Borie & Medary for Edward K. Rowland and his wife Esther Harrison Rowland. Rowland was vice-president of a company which made automobile and carriage springs. The house, built on 65 acres, was a belated wedding gift from Esther’s father. The mansion was designed in the Italian style, painted a dusty pink-orange, accompanied by an octagonal gazebo and formal gardens. The gardens led down to Gulph Creek. Rowland only lived at Rock Rose for three years, having died from apoplexy at age 45. The house was passed on to his daughter, Esther H.R. Clifford and her husband Henry.
