An article in the October 31 issue of the Suburban and Wayne Times profiles the rehabilitation of a South Wayne carriage house. The building was once part of the Car-Alan estate, owned by clothing retailer Alan H. Reed. The estate was once bound by Louella Ave., Summit (South Wayne) Ave., Pembroke Ave., and Conestoga Rd. The mansion (which is still a private residence) and carriage house were both designed by William L. Price. The estate was subdivided some time ago, and the carraige house was made into a separate property, along with several other pieces of the property. The carriage house was hidden for years behind plants, and was just uncovered for restoration by Peter Archer of Archer & Buchanan Architecture, Ltd. Much of the original structure remains, and original elements will be kept where possible. The Suburban article can be seen here. Another Note: Architect George Thomas will be talking at the Radnor Memorial Library on Tuesday, November 12. His talk is entitled "What William Price Learned from Frank Furness: The Poetry of the Present." There is a large amount of William Price architecture in Wayne, and Thomas recently wrote the book "Willaim L. Price: From Arts and Crafts to Modern Design," an extensive history of the architect's work. I will not be able to attend the talk, but I have met Mr. Thomas in the past, and I guarantee that anyone interested in architecture or Wayne in general will not be disappointed by this talk.
