Minella's Main Line Diner, a fixture in downtown Wayne since its opening on June 12, 1964, is leaving Wayne. According to an article which was printed in today's editions of the Suburban & Wayne Times and Main Line Life, the diner is being moved to Florida to be renamed and used as the Lake City Hilltop Diner. The historic diner was originally called the Colonial Diner, and was first owned by Arthur Amoroso. Minella's is the second diner to be removed from Wayne in the past few years, the other being the "China Buddha," now on the site of Margaret Kuo's Restaurant on Lancaster pike. Minella's is planned to return as a larger restaurant on the same site in August. Both old diners are being replaced by larger restaurants, which fits with the changing pace amd tastes of Wayne. The 21st Century Main Liner unfortunately cannot grasp the charm and appeal of the small, country-esque diner of yesteryear. Believe it or not, Wayne was a country town not so long ago. The development of the local farms, the cramming of many houses onto once single lots (Poplar Ave.) and the removal of diners in order to draw larger profits from higher-class restaurants is all contributing to the urbanization of Wayne. Many might say this is good for the town, and contributes to the growth and prosperity of its residents. In my less than 20 short years in Wayne, I have personally seen many changes, many of which I do not find appealing.
