The CVS in Wayne's center has demolished a victorian house next door to the drugstore, presumably for expansion or extra parking. There was an effort for a long time to save the house, which was one of the original Wendell and Smith constructions which lined Lancaster Avenue. There are but a few of these houses left on that street. According to one plan which arose about two years ago, the MAB paint store on the right side of the CVS almost moved into the house, on the opposite side of the pharmacy. This apparently did not work, and the house was abandoned after briefly being used as state congressman Dick Tilghman's campaign headquarters. And so, greed and impatience took over, and earlier this month the house went. Large drugstore chains such as CVS do this sort of thing all the time. In July 1998, Rite Aid demolished the national landmark Victoria Theatre in Shamokin, PA, for some extra parking spaces. The Victoria was designed by W.H. Lee, a native of Shamokin. Lee also designed the Anthony Wayne Theatre here in Wayne.
>>> The Saturday Club in Wayne is renovating its building, redoing the three gables on top of the landmark building. (see picture below)
>>> Minella's update: The new Minella's Diner is taking shape on Lancaster avenue. It appears to be quite like the original, perhaps a bit larger, but the overall layout seems to be the same. One of the main differences which is now visible is a row of half Ionic columns surrounding the exterior. Just what everyone wants on their 50's-style diner: a fake Roman collonade!
