Storm Paralyzes Wayne, Radnor

September 20 2003

The remnants of Hurricane Isabel left its mark on the Wayne area last week, downing trees and leaving residents without power and cable. As of Saturday about half of Wayne is still without electricity as a result of the Thursday storm. Trees were down on Poplar lane, West Beechtree lane, Chamonix lane and others. The devastation is reminiscent of Hurricane Floyd's aftermath in 1999.

President Bush made a visit to the area, staying at the Radnor Hotel while fundraising in the Philadelphia area. Bush arrived at 4:45 pm on Tuesday, September 16 and left the next day. Preparations for the visit began the previous Monday, and the entire entourage occupied 80 of the hotel's 170 rooms. The president's motorcade consisted of 22 vehicles, and Radnor police assisted with the Secret Service in security matters. In typical Bush fashion, the commander-in-chief complemented the Hotel's owner with a nonsensical comment: "It's certainly a lovely place, and you have a lovely place here." Presidents have stayed in the area before. President Grant stayed at the Bellevue Hotel in Wayne in 1881 for the meeting of the Aztec Club. It is possible (though not certain) that Richard Nixon also lodged in the area during his 1968 campaign visit.
