Former Wayne Diner Finds New Life in New York

February 2 2004

Within the past few months, the former "China Buddha" restaurant of Wayne has reopened as the "Lake Effect Diner" in Buffalo, New York. The building, a genuine Lake View pre-fabricated diner from 1952, left Wayne in October, 2001 to make way for Margaret Kuo's new restaurant. Lake View diners are among the most famous and sought-after diners in the United States. Although it began in Wayne as an American-style diner, it was later transformed into the China Buddha, a rather unpopular Chinese restaurant. After the 2001 move, the diner was restored to its former gleaming stainless steel beauty and re-erected in Buffalo. It was originally going to be called "Marge's Main Line Diner," but after a long winter of storms, the name was aptly changed to the "Lake Effect Diner." After just a few months of operation, the diner has gained popularity, as the various blogs of Buffalo residents can attest. So why couldn't Wayne have had a genuine restored Lake View diner? A false perception has been thought about Wayne in recent years, that a low- or mid-priced restaurant cannot possibly succeed anymore with the growth of the dining scene on North Wayne avenue. The success of Minella's certainly disproves this, yet Wayne cannot stop attracting some of the area's most prominent restaurateurs. Although this brings much more income to the area, it is still unfortunate in many ways. In any case, congratulations, Buffalo; hope you enjoy the diner as much as we ... could have.     More about the diner can be read here.

> Radnor Township has recently concluded its survey of historical properties, hopefully soon evolving the survey into a historic preservation ordinance. According to the Township's report, "Thanks to a grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, the Township was able to engage consultant Bob Wise of Wise Preservation Planning." Among the over 200 sites picked by Wise as historic, were the Radnor Friends Meeting, Wayne Station and ... the former Harrison's storefront? This is a rather curious addition, especially for Radnor to mention in its press release, but Wise must have had good reasons. Radnor plans to introduce a preservation ordinance to the Board of Commissioners sometime this month. The whole report can be read here.
