P&W Ground to be Broken June 10

June 4 2004

Today Radnor Township announced that the official groundbreaking of the long-awaited P&W trail will be on June 11. The project, sponsored by both the Township and PennDOT, is a 2.2 mile "hike and bike" trail extending from Old Sugartown Rd. to Radnor Chester Rd. According to the Township, the groundbreaking will take place "Thursday, June 10, at 1:30 p.m. on Gallagher Road just off South Devon Avenue; all residents and interested parties are welcome to join the festivities and help break ground."

The new trail will be built on top of a branch of the former Philadelphia & Western Railroad, which operated from 1907-1956. Much of the right-of-way has sat abandoned since the last trolley ran, and the trial was first proposed in the mid-1990's. Ground was supposed to be broken several times before, though delays have been rampant. Hopefully the June 10 groundbreaking will finally see some progress in this project. More about the old railroad, including photos of the trail now, can be seen here.
