P&W Trail Ceremonially Under Way

June 10 2004

Today Radnor Township held a ceremony at the Township building on Iven Avenue to mark the ceremonial beginning of the P&W trail construction. The ceremony was planned to take place on Gallagher Avenue in West Wayne, where one of the entrances will be. Due to weather forecasts, the groundbreaking was moved to the Township building, where remarks were made and "ground was broken" by ceremonially turning over dirt on a tarp. There was a good turnout considering the move and weekday timing.

The much delayed trail came about from the abandonment of the Philadelphia & Western railroad in 1956. It is said that the idea of a trail was first proposed in 1976, but was not considered seriously until 1994. Construction was postponed many times since then, and after various design and other issues, it is finally being begun.
