The End of an Era: L.K. Burket Closes

June 16 2005

According to the June 15 issue of Main Line Life, longtime fuel supplier L.K. Burket has closed. Since 1887, L.K. Burket has been supplying Wayne and surrounding towns with necessities such as heating fuel, coal and cooling services, not to mention straw and feed in its earlier days. It was built in the most industrial part of Wayne, surrounded by utilities such as the Wayne Steam Heat Plant, the Wayne Water Works and the Wayne Electric Light Plant. Since that time, Burket's has remained in its original trademark light blue building, which was altered over time to accommodate for business changes.

Burket's is one of the only businesses in Wayne to last more than a century. Now the oldest business is Adelberger's Florists, founded in 1888. It is uncertain what will happen to the Burket building and land, but the prime real estate will be tempting for developers.
