Downtown Wayne's largest construction project in decades has gone into full swing. As of mid-January, construction vehicles had begun moving topsoil on the property and some of the building's boundaries had been marked.
The sight of the Middle School field covered with piles of dirt brings a bit of sadness to those who know that property well. As well as being the home of Middle School sports and recess, the school field has been host to so many community gatherings over the years, from the July 4th Celebration in 1918 to the annual Radnor Fall Festival. It will be at least another year before all of the land will be usable again.
In addition, the lawn of the Administration Building on South Wayne Avenue has been converted into a temporary parking lot during construction.
The new school is slated for opening in September, 2007, at which point the 1923 Middle School and former High School will be demolished.
